CLINICAL EMBRYOLOGIST TRAINEE

CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Provide technical support to human in vitro fertilization.

BASIC FUNCTION

Participate in on-the-job training in an in vitro fertilization laboratory. Develop competency in conducting procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under direct supervision, participate in on-the-job training to learn and perform in vitro fertilization procedures and analysis. Perform in vitro fertilization procedures under observation until all procedures can be performed independently.

TYPICAL WORK

Participate in structured training modes to perform the following:

Identify and retrieve human eggs from follicular fluid aspirations;

Evaluate eggs for maturity;

Prepare semen for fertilization; perform a variety of sperm viability enhancement techniques;

Perform in vitro fertilization of human gametes;

Determine successful fertilization; select and prepare embryos for transfer;

Perform cryopreservation of embryos;

Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment;

Perform microinjection techniques;

Prepare all media used with human gametes;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science AND one year of experience as a technologist working with sterile techniques and cell culture.

OR equivalent education/experience.


CLINICAL EMBRYOLOGIST

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform gamete incubation, insemination, embryo culture, cryopreservation and other techniques in human in vitro fertilization. Conduct embryo toxicity testing. Maintain laboratory records and assist in research.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, review and evaluate viability of human gametes; prepare and inseminate human eggs; culture, evaluate and prepare fertilized eggs for transfer; record and summarize data in support of research.

TYPICAL WORK

Identify and retrieve human eggs from follicular fluid aspirations;

Evaluate eggs for maturity;

Prepare semen for fertilization; perform a variety of sperm viability enhancement techniques;

Perform in vitro fertilization of human gametes;

Perform microinjection techniques;

Determine successful fertilization; select and prepare embryos for transfer;

Perform cryopreservation of remaining embryos;

Maintain clinical records;

Assist in research by implementing protocols and analyzing data;

Prepare and test all media used with human gametes;

Assist in identifying and testing new procedures and/or equipment;

May prepare and maintain laboratory equipment; order supplies; order and maintain mice; conduct mouse embryo toxicity tests;

May present patient data at daily rounds;

May assist in orienting and/or training other staff and/or residents;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field AND one year of experience as a Clinical Embryologist Trainee or equivalent

OR equivalent education/experience.


CLINICAL EMBRYOLOGIST LEAD

BASIC FUNCTION

Lead the work of Clinical Embryologists and/or others. Perform gamete incubation, insemination, embryo culture, cryopreservation and other techniques in human in vitro fertilization. Maintain laboratory records, assist in research, and assist in report preparation.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Under general direction, perform clinical duties in support of in vitro fertilization; record and summarize data in support of research.

TYPICAL WORK

Coordinate clinic and andrology schedules;

Prepare and maintain lab equipment, order supplies, order and maintain mice, and conduct mouse embryo toxicity tests;

Assist in orienting new residents, fellows and new clinical embryologists;

Record data, such as procedures performed and patients seen, for research and compliance reports;

Assist in determining and monitoring quality assurance requirements;

Assist in preparation of laboratory reports;

Train Embryologists and/or others in aspects of in vitro fertilization procedures;

Perform the duties of Clinical Embryologists;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science AND two years of experience as a Clinical Embryologist

OR equivalent education/experience.

 


CLINICAL EMBRYOLOGIST SUPERVISOR

BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise Clinical Embryologists and/or others; coordinate the day-to-day activities of the laboratory; oversee the maintenance of laboratory records; assist in research; develop and monitor budgets; coordinate quality assurance program; coordinate and provide training to staff and/or others in all lab procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action. Oversee daily operations of in vitro fertilization unit; coordinate quality assurance and training; develop and monitor budget.

TYPICAL WORK

Oversee daily operation of the embryology laboratory;

Make all operational decisions in the absence of the Director;

Implement and monitor quality assurance programs for the laboratory; establish quality control standards with the Director; identify problems and take corrective action;

Develop and monitor budgets; recommend and justify capital acquisitions; in the absence of the Director, make decisions to exceed the budget;

Prepare daily and weekly reports of laboratory activities;

Train laboratory personnel in all lab procedures including safe handling of gametes and associated mediums;

Participate in the development and evaluation of new laboratory procedures and protocols;

Represent embryology laboratory at clinic executive committee meetings, andrology meetings and physician meetings when appropriate;

Attend or send a representative to present patient data at daily rounds;

Present patient data at chart review;

Assure effective operations of the laboratory; oversee ordering and utilization of supplies; evaluate and select equipment for purchase; troubleshoot problems; ensure all maintenance on instruments and equipment is completed; establish and review maintenance contracts;

Performing literature searches; assist in the design and implementation of projects and analyze results;

Participate in developing and updating procedure manuals;

Track monthly laboratory data such as pregnancy rates, fertilization rates, and total number of assisted reproductive technology egg recoveries;

Perform the work of Clinical Embryologist Lead;

Perform related duties as required.
